Throw Down (Rudao longhu bang)
A judo champion gone to seed, an ambitious newcomer in search of a master, a young singer who refuses to be told that she has no talent, the challenge of an unbeatable rival. Acclaimed Hong Kong director Johnnie To describes this as his homage to Kurosawa, particularly the master's debut feature Sanshiro Sugata. To gives us his own judo saga full of superb set pieces: three overlapping interrogations in a nightclub, a villain who can't resist insulting his opponents even if they're little kids, a chase which starts in a gambling den, peters out and then reignites. Last year's award-winning Running On Karma showed that To is a director who is increasingly alert to the underlying abstraction that can be teased out of popular genres.

Reviews
“Johnnie To's a rare find – a distinctive action director who possesses a style that is flexible enough so that it never feels as if he's repeating himself. Throw Down, his latest, is nothing less than a playful musical masquerading in a street fighter's clothes.”
