When the movie-prop store that young and exquisitely androgenous Chep works in is to be sold, his world will change. When he is not going to the local cinema alone to watch arcane, romantic drivel, he sleeps, works and stays in amongst the paraphernalia of film sets. In his job, he invariably locates the bizarre items sought, but difficult requests from an attractive and mysterious woman propel Chep into adopting desperate methods to satisfy her. These missions attract the attention of Detective Barbara who soon has Chep cornered. The conscience-like hallucinations and fantasies Chep experiences only confuse him as to what to do. This is brilliantly portrayed through a kaleidoscope of recreated familiar images, characters and scenarios that we know from film. With some scenes containing animation, the wonderfully banal dialogue only accentuates the visual extravagance of this often hilarious though sometimes grim, metaphysical and philosophical fairy-tale. The Brothers Quay meet High Fidelity, Twin Peaks, Pulp Fiction, Delicatessan and many more in a dazzlingly audacious "little" story. Stars Michael Pitt, Gale Harold (from TV's Queer as Folk) and Paige Turco.

Reviews

“* * * * (four stars) An audacious debut for Toronto filmmaker Aaron Woodley the delightful animations and twisted humour recall Tim Burton's early works.”
