New Blood (Re xie qing nian)
The Asian horror movie has carried all before it recently, reinventing the genre in the most unsettling ways and providing a model for imitation by those dullards in Hollywood. Hong Konger Cheang Pou-soi represents new blood indeed with this follow-up to his 2001 sleeper hit Horror Hotline Big Head Monster. A pair of lovers attempt a suicide pact and when the man is saved by a transfusion, the enraged female ghost wreaks vengeance on the blood donors who brought him back. The coldness of the living meets the cold of the dead as the silence screams in the sterile neon. Cheang pushes horror beyond narrative to a point where sound and imagery float free and horror pushes towards the avant-garde. Lots of films nowadays know what scares you, but this is a voyage of discovery on the question of how to scare you.

Reviews
“Director Cheang's skills with the camera and a skilful editor are more than enough to give the film much needed visual flairs.”
