Nanook of the North
Robert J. Flaherty, USA 1922
Nanook of the North is arguably the world's first feature documentary. American director Robert Flaherty (Man of Aran, Louisiana Story) had filmed an early visit to Canada's North, but the original footage was destroyed by fire. Taking this as a blessing, Flaherty returned to re-shoot the struggling life of the Inuit "Nanook" whose real name was Allariallak. Forever criticised as being staged and ethnographic, the film is nevertheless the original testament to the fine line between fact and fiction in all documentaries.
