Greendale
Greendale takes its title from Neil Young's 2003 concept album and his fictitious Green clan, a small town American family with leftist leanings and more than its fair share of problems. Set entirely to Neil Young and Crazy Horse's songs and shot on handheld Super 8 blown up to 35mm, Greendale falls somewhere between feature-length music video and epic home-movie, perhaps genealogically reminiscent of Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark. Told through music, Greendale depicts the disruption to the Green's peaceful existence when evil arrives in the form of the "Devil" (Eric Johnson strutting in red sports coat and shoes) who manages to incite Jed, the black sheep of the family, to kill a cop. A media-frenzy descends on the family and the film documents their reaction to the unwelcomed attention. The driving Crazy Horse backbeat climaxes with a post-9/11 chorus of fist-waving cops and firemen swaying behind activist daughter Sun to the vocals of Young exhorting all to save the planet and "be the rain".
