This chilling and beautifully imagined futuristic film takes the present to its logical conclusion. Shanghai in the future: cloning and artificial insemination abound, the planet's people and their diverse cultures and language have been globalised and morphed together, and the world continues to be divided into the wealthy and the exiled.

Reviews

“Winterbottom's depiction of a dystopian, chillingly circumscribed future is utterly believable and logical and his dreamlike love story, graced with note-perfect performances by Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton, is one of the most moving of the year.”

Shlomo Schwartzberg, Box Office Magazine

About the Director

Michael Winterbottom

A keen admirer of German new wave films, Winterbottom's improvisational verite-style films often deal with social and political concerns, referencing the works of Werner Herzog or Krzysztof Kieslowski. Co-founder of the UK Revolution Films, this dynamic and prolific filmmaker is best known for Wonderland and 24 Hour Party People.
