Chain
Experimental filmmaker Jem Cohen blurs the lines between fact and fiction in this pointed observation of the homogenising effect global corporate strategies have on local lives, cultures and especially the built environment all over the world. Juxtaposing two ostensibly different yet intimately interconnected women - well-paid Japanese Tamiko looking for commercial property opportunities in the US, and teenage run-away American Amanda eking out a desperate existence on the margins of society - Chain gently reminds us to see, think and act before it's too late.
Reviews
“Both hypnotic and politically alert, Chain finds something melancholically poetic in the least inviting of milieux.”
Jonathan Romney, The Independent

About the Director
Jem Cohen
Jem Cohen is an award winning filmmaker based in New York. Cohen's films are haunting, hypnotic and utterly unique. He often works with musicians - REM, Fugazi, Godspeed You Black Emperor - and there's something musical about the flow of imagery in his breath-taking feature Benjamin Smoke and shorts, which mix documentary with experimental narrative techniques. His influences include punk rock, Outsider Art and philosopher Walter Benjamin. Cohen has made two feature length documentaries, as well as numerous video art pieces and his work has been shown on PBS, BBC, Planete and the Sundance Channel.
