Carol, a 12 year-old Spanish-American girl brought up in New York, travels to Spain, during the 1938 Civil War, with her sick mother. When her mother dies, Carol goes to live with her aunt and uncle. In the meantime the war ends in victory for Franco and one evening Carol's father returns. The following morning though he is forced to flee for his life.
